Professor Emeritus HANEDA Masashi to be Honored as 2024 Person of Cultural Merit

We are pleased to announce that former director of Tokyo College and professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo HANEDA Masashi has been selected as a Person of Cultural Merit for 2024. This award is presented by the Agency for Cultural Affairs to recognize an individual for particularly distinguished service related to the advancement and development of culture.

Professor HANEDA contributed to the establishment of Tokyo College in February 2019 and served as the College’s first director for five years before his retirement in March 2024. Through his efforts to connect the brightest minds around the world with those at the University of Tokyo and to create interdisciplinary opportunities for promising early-career researchers, he has ensured the development of Tokyo College into a place where open dialogue and discussion can pave the way for future knowledge.
