My research focuses on the activities and mental histories of the natives of mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, as well as the Chinese people who migrated from there to the North America, to better understand the contemporary history of the Chinese world. I have been working on the historical development of the Baodiao Movement (保釣運動 in Chinese, short for 保衛釣魚台（島） 運動) from the perspective of how socialist ideas emerged among Chinese students in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s, by conducting both literature survey and interviews with movement participants. The movement was initiated by the Chinese to defend the sovereignty of the Diaoyu or Senkaku Islands, which was disputed by China and Japan. I have always been interested in the identities of Chinese living in different areas of the world with different backgrounds. In future research, with a conscious awareness of human mobility and acceptance of ideas, I would like to examine and transformation of the activities and the mentalities of Chinese in the U.S., as well as the youth in Taiwan and Hong Kong after they experienced the Baodiao Movement.
