LESTEL教授は、生きるという意味をその複雑さと次元のすべてにおいて考えることを目指す「哲学的動物行動学」の展開に従事してきた。哲学的動物行動学は動物行動学の哲学ではない。その独創性は、動物、植物、菌類、ウイルスのみならず、AI、ロボット、デジタルアバター、人形、ぬいぐるみ、操り人形、架空のキャラクター、幽霊、天使、地球外生命体など、すべての実在または潜在的な生物を考慮し、ポスト生物学的生命と進行中のポストヒューマン生態の状況について考えることである。
LESTEL教授は、多元宇宙論という新興の哲学的パラダイムの枠組みの中で哲学的動物行動学に取り組んでいる。多元宇宙論とは、現在の世界を、それが結びついている可能性のある複数の世界と対峙させることによって考えることを目指し、SFと芸術を駆使した前例のない冒険に哲学を巻き込むものである。
LESTEL教授は、哲学がどの程度まで特定の動物、ホモサピエンスに根ざしているのか、そして人間以外の主体（AIなど）、サイボーグの哲学者、遺伝子組み換えの哲学者たちによって生み出される哲学とはどのようなものなのか、という問いを探求している。2017年より、Gentiane VENTURE教授と共に「ロボットとAIの行動学」の原理の開発に取り組む。
