プリンストン大学社会学部教授、Henry Wendt III ’55東アジア研究教授。主に、日本における主要な人口動態の変化のパターンと影響について研究している。晩婚化、親との同居の延長、婚前同棲、授かり婚、離婚の増加など、最近の家族の変化の主要な特徴について広く執筆している。また、高齢者の健康状態と家族、仕事、地域の特徴との関係や、日本において増加するシングルマザーとその子どもたちの幸福度について、多角的に検証している。現在、日本の少子化の原因を探る新しいプロジェクトと、日本の子どもの発達における格差を探るプロジェクトに携わっている。アメリカ人口学会副会長、Demography、Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciencesの副編集長を務める。
