1960年代、1970年代に炭鉱などの重要な産業施設が閉鎖され始めて以来、政府の役人、歴史家、地元の市民、芸術家、建築家、デザイナー、活動家など日本に住む人々がどのように日本の産業遺産を理解してきたかについて調査を行っている。地元住民、他の地域からの日本人訪問者および外国人観光客に向けてこれらの遺産がどのように捉えられ説明されてきたのかに関心がある。政府とユネスコなどの国際機関(または外国政府)がキュレーションと広報活動に参加する際、産業遺産の受容と表象がどのように変化するのかについて調べている。
