コーネル大学アジア研究科名誉教授。2021年7月に退職するまで、アジア研究学科、比較文学科で教鞭を執る。比較文学、インテレクチュアル・ヒストリー、翻訳研究、人種主義とナショナリズムの研究といった分野で多くの著書がある。主な著書は：The End of Pax Americana:The Loss of Empire and Hikikomori Nationalism（日本語：『パクス・アメリカーナの終焉：帝国の喪失とひきこもりナショナリズム』（デューク大学出版、2022年）、『ひきこもりの国民主義』（岩波書店、2017年）、『日本/映像/米国―共感の共同体と帝国的国民主義』（青土社、2007年）、『日本思想という問題――翻訳と主体』(岩波人文書セレクション 2012年) 、 『死産される日本語・日本人 「日本」の歴史―地政的配置 (講談社学術文庫)』、『過去の声―一八世紀日本の言説における言語の地位』（以文社、2002年）など。Sandro Mezzadraとの共編 “Translation”(「翻訳」（2014年）、Hyon Joo Yooとの共編The Trans-Pacific Imagination（『環太平洋の想像力』）（World Scientific、2012年）、The End of Area (『地域の終焉』（positions asia critique特集号、デューク大学、2019年）など、編著書も数多くもつ。韓国語、中国語、英語、スペイン語、日本語の5ヶ国語による多言語シリーズ「TRACES」プロジェクトの創刊編集者を務めた経験を持つ。
